Staying Fueled for Summer

The dog days of summer are upon us. It is really hot outside especially at the track on race days. I know that you love being outside to stay active, so now more than ever, it’s important to stay fueled to keep your engines going strong. My team works hard all season long to stay fit and I am glad that you are doing the same. Check out some of these tips and insights on staying fit and fueled in the heat of summer.

Have fun this summer, but remember to keep your engine fueled with a balanced breakfast and snacking pit stops during the day.

Keep up the great work!

Staying Fit in the Heat

Hey race fans – I’m Dean Golich, Carl’s trainer from Carmichael Training Systems. Here are some tips you can use, just like Carl, to help you stay fit, fueled and active in the summer heat!

1. It is important to refuel your body pre– and post–workout.

2. Stay hydrated with plenty of water! Did you know that you can become dehydrated in as little as 30 minutes of exercise, so a good rule of thumb is to consume one regular size (21 oz) bottle of water per hour of exercise?

3. If you’re exercising outside, don’t forget to wear plenty of sunscreen to help prevent sunburn and to help protect your skin.

4. It takes the body at least ten days to adjust to a hot environment – so make sure to adjust your intensity by 60-70% during this time until you acclimate to warmer weather.

5. Wear light weight, light-colored clothing that doesn’t restrict movement during your workout.

6. Make sure you stretch for 15 minutes at the end of your workout.

7. Participating in a variety of activities is an essential part of staying active AND you won’t get bored with the same old activities!

Remember, no matter what time of the year it is, it’s always important to stay active!!
